This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 is a long-wheelbase four-door Pullman model, with production completed on July 31, 1969. Originally delivered to the Libyan Development Company, it was reportedly intended for use by King Idris of Libya. The car later spent time in Japan before being exported to California, where the seller acquired it in 2011. A comprehensive refurbishment totaling over $150k was completed in 2014, which included refinishing the body in black, reupholstering the interior in red leather, renewing the burl wood trim, and overhauling the suspension, brakes, and exhaust system.
Power comes from a 6.3-liter M100 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Notable equipment includes a rear cabin divider, inward-facing rear seats, curtains, front and rear air conditioning, a Becker Mexico radio, and a cooled rear drink cabinet. The car was also featured in the TV series The Man in the High Castle. In March 2021, maintenance included an oil change and servicing of the air-conditioning system. The car is now offered with the seller’s service records, a tool kit and accessories, a car cover, a copy of the data card, and a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.
Mercedes-Benz produced 428 long-wheelbase Pullman 600s between 1963 and 1981, with 304 being four-door variants. This example was originally finished in black but was repainted brown during its time in Japan. The refurbishment included a bare-metal respray in the original color, performed by Larry Dittmann of Show Car Kustoms in Hurricane, Utah. The bumpers and trim were re-chromed by Queen City Plating in Mukilteo, Washington. Additional features include European-market headlights, a bumper-mounted parking pole, a European-market license plate holder, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller notes a small nick in the passenger side door glass and some nicks on the right front fender and fuel filler door.
The cabin is upholstered in red leather with matching replacement carpets sourced from GAHH Automotive in Los Angeles, California. The burl wood trim was restored by Madera Concepts, and the hydraulic system, which powers the windows, central locks, and seat adjustments, was overhauled by 600 specialist Claus Gronau and Star Motors of Endicott, New York. The front Becker Mexico radio was rebuilt, although the junction box for the microphone intercom system is not currently installed but is included in the sale. Some wear is noted on the driver’s seat.
The 6.3-liter M100 V8 features single overhead camshafts and Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Factory-rated output was 300 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque, sent to the rear wheels via a column-shifted four-speed automatic transmission. The engine and transmission were removed during the refurbishment by Hartmann Motors of Portland, Oregon, with hardware zinc-plated and replaced as needed. A stainless steel Timevalve Manufacturing exhaust system has been installed, though the seller notes a vibration at low speeds. The most recent oil change was performed in March 2021.
